Synthetic diamonds are diamonds that are not mined, but produced synthetically. In other words, a synthetic diamond is a diamond of the same durability and refractive index as a natural diamond. The only difference is that it is made artificially.
Even though the synthetic diamonds were first produced in 1954, no synthetic diamonds ever came to market until recently because it took that long to come up with high quality synthetic diamonds that were approaching the quality of a natural diamond.
But in the end, once synthetic diamonds approached the quality of natural diamonds, it turned out that it cost more to produce a synthetic diamond than it did to mine and cut natural diamonds!
A few years ago, a company developed a technology that allowed them to create synthetic diamonds of the same quality as natural diamonds, but at much lower cost.
Today, that company manufactures synthetic diamonds. Including colored and also white diamonds. These diamonds are relatively inexpensive. They cost only 30% of the price of a natural diamond.
However, there is a shortage of synthetic diamonds, and it looks like they are less readily available than natural diamonds!
